West Indies bat first in opening ODI

West Indies captain Darren Sammy won the toss and his team will bat first in the opening one-day international of the five-match series at Gros Islet in St Lucia. This ground was also the scene for the opening match of Pakistan's tour, a Twenty20 that West Indies won by seven runs. The pitch slowed down noticeably towards the end of that game, and so Sammy had no hesitation in opting to bat first today.
Spinner Devendra Bishoo played a big part in West Indies' Twenty20 win, taking four cheap wickets, and unsurprisingly he finds a place in their starting line-up. With West Indies opting for just a solitary specialist spinner, and Marlon Samuels on hand for some part-time offspin, there is no space for legspinner Anthony Martin, who is in the limited-overs squad but is yet to make his international debut. With Kemar Roach, Andre Russell, Sammy and the returning Dwayne Bravo filling the seamers ranks, Ravi Rampaul also sits out.
There are no real surprises in Pakistan's XI, with Mohammad Hafeez set to open with Ahmed Shehzad, Saeed Ajmal preferred to Abdur Rehman and 20-year-old allrounder Hammad Azam set for his debut.
West Indies: 1 Devon Smith, 2 Lendl Simmons, 3 Darren Bravo, 4 Marlon Samuels, 5 Kirk Edwards, 6 Dwayne Bravo, 7 Darren Sammy (capt), 8 Carlton Baugh (wk), 9 Andre Russell, 10 Devendra Bishoo, 11 Kemar Roach
Pakistan: 1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Ahmed Shehzad, 3 Asad Shafiq, 4 Umar Akmal, 5 Misbah-ul-Haq, 6 Hammad Azam, 7 Mohammad Salman (wk), 8 Shahid Afridi (capt), 9 Wahab Riaz, 10 Junaid Khan, 11 Saeed Ajmal
